A visit from the ‘Law’

18th July 2018Miss R jordan

Last week we had Law students from Warwick University visit the school to deliver a Law Workshop. The students debated the Regina Vs Dudley and Stephens case, which was titled “The case of the cabin boy who got eaten“.

Students acted as either the defence or prosecution and debated their side of the story. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to explore and use a wide range of skills, whilst delving into a career in Law.

Let’s get QUIZZICAL

By Miss R jordan20th June 2018

It was with great excitement and anticipation that the four different house teams gathered for this year’s edition of the annual ‘Let’s get quizzical’ SHINE event. After a closely fought contest last year, expectations for another set of titanic battles were high.

Following their victories over Manor and Priory, it was left to Castle and Abbey to compete for the illustrious title. In the closest of contests, Castle emerged victorious. In an exclusive interview with one of the participants, Alice Kerridge gave the following comments:

The competition was exhilarating and to win for my house was a great experience. The entire event kept everyone on the edge of their seats and the house rivalry spurred us on to fight even harder. I’m glad to have had this opportunity to participate in the race for the house cup.

Many thanks to all of the staff and pupils involved and we look forward to another exciting edition of the competition next year!

SHINE April session

By Miss R jordan27th April 2018

On Thursday 26th April, as part of our SHINE programme, pupils from Year 7 -10 were invited to take part in a fun-packed session with visitors from Bosch’s Research and Development department. In the session, pupils learnt about the power of working in teams and how teams can become more effective using AGILE methods.

AGILE started in manufacturing, spread to be the most common way of developing software and is rapidly spreading into all aspects of work. It recognises that the pace of change in the world is getting faster and that traditional company structures are too slow to react. Companies recognise that they are failing to use their greatest asset: the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm of the people that work for them.

With exams now introduced across all year groups, so much attention is put on individual performance. However, working successfully as a team is vital as pupils make their move beyond Studley High School. Personal success can very much depend on your ability to work effectively with others.

I really liked that this session was different that others we have done previously. We got to work with teams with children we didn’t know and had to find ways to communicate effectively to complete the tasks set.

(Year 9 SHINE pupil).

By the end of the session, pupils had learnt that:

  • A team is stronger when everyone actively participates and works towards a common target
  • The most effective teams use the strengths of all the team members
  • Communication is vital.
  • It is OK to experiment and fail as long as we learn quickly
  • Quick repetitive cycles can lead to rapid improvements

A huge thank you to Richard and Tristan from the Research and Development team at Bosch for leading the event and Mrs Evans for organising.
