University Birmingham – Big Maths Quiz

By Miss R jordan6th March 2019

Last month, Year 10 pupils represented Studley High School in the University of Birmingham Big Maths Quiz.

Schools from across Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire and Worcestershire were represented.

The event consisted of a number of rounds played against more than 40 other teams. There were some excellent problem solving questions including one round which was in the form of “move two matchsticks in this shape to leave two equilateral triangles” and another require excellent estimating abilities to answer questions like “how many metal discs are there on the Bull at the Bull Ring”. After a close fought contest 3 teams were tied in first place at the end of the rounds and had to answer a tie breaker question – “how many audience seats are there at the Birmingham Symphony Hall”.

During the lunch break students were able to explore the University of Birmingham and have lunch with the undergraduate students.

Although Studley High School were not placed in the top 3, an enjoyable and interesting day was had by our pupils who were wonderful representatives of Studley High School.

SHINE Art Session

By Miss R jordan5th March 2019

Last week’s SHINE session focused on the work of one of Britains best-loved illustrators – Quentin Blake.

He famously brought to life the characters featured in the books of Roald Dahl.

This Art SHINE workshop explored the illustrator’s style of drawing and his ability to capture such memorable personalities as Matilda and Willy Wonka in a minimal and seemingly spontaneous way.
Whilst they worked, pupils could see a video clip of Quentin Blake himself at work. Some students created life-sized figures based on school students, whilst others created illustrations for the different subject departments in the school. They came up with some charming and humourous results:

Iceland Trip

By Miss R jordan1st March 2019

The Geography department have recently returned from a 4 day field trip to Iceland. We had a fantastic time and were really proud of our students. Their maturity and behaviour on the long journey each way was outstanding and each and every one of them was a pleasure to be with.

We were extremely lucky with the weather in Iceland as it was warmer than anticipated and we saw some sunshine. The more mountainous areas were still covered with snow making them stunningly beautiful. On the first full day there, we managed to visit the very snowy Gullfoss waterfall, walk between the tectonic plates at Thingvellir national park, swim outside in the very warm geothermally-heated pool and watch the boiling streams flow past. Our students learnt a lot about the ways that the Icelandic people have managed to harness this energy to improve their lives. We saw several eruptions of Strokkur geyser and some managed to capture impressive slow-motion video of the event.

On Monday we travelled along the southern shore of Iceland and were treated to spectacular views of Hekla and Eyjafjallajokull volcanoes. Students thoroughly enjoyed climbing up onto Sólheimajökull glacier. We learnt a lot about the impact of climate change and enjoyed the challenge of climbing the steep ice in crampons with an ice-axe for assistance. The waves pounding against the black sandy shore at Reynisfjara were breathtaking and we were able to see the hexagonal basalt columns and sea stacks close to the beach. The return journey allowed us to visit two spectacular waterfall; Seljalandsfoss where we scrambled through the spray to walk behind the waterfall and Skógafoss where most climbed nearly 400 steps to reach the top.

All-in-all, a fantastic trip -we are now turning our attention to planning our next trip to Iceland in October 2019 with our year 9 pupils.

Included on the tour:

Thingvellier National Park
Sevret Lagoon, Fludir
Gullfoss Waterfall
Kerid Crater
Hveragerdi Greenhouse Village
Sólheimajökull Glacier Walk
Viking village of Vik
Reynisfjara and Basaltic Columns
Selialsndsfloss Waterfall
Skogar Waterfall
Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant

SHINE – History Around Us

By Miss R jordan25th February 2019

SHINE pupils were treated to a “History around us” Shine session on the Thursday before half term.

Pupils were introduced to the idea that they are living through historical events which will be written about for years to come. Brexit was the topic for the session. Pupils were asked what “Brexit” meant to them, and whilst many knew it was ‘to do with leaving the EU’, a few knew anything more on this topic.

Pupils completed a quick quiz on the EU – understanding the basics of the organisation and how it had developed following World War Two. They were then asked to conduct their own vote, given the advertising materials used by both the Leave and Remain campaigns. They analysed posters, leaflets and much more before voting themselves. It was an overwhelming victory for remain.

With their votes cast, pupils then took on the role of negotiators. They were given four key areas: Trade, Justice, Irish Border & How much the UK is going to have to pay. They began to draft agreements in order to keep the UK happy but also the EU. Negotiations ensued, with pupils beginning to understand the complexities of the process that faces the current government. Many excellent questions were raised and there were more questions than answers, given the current situation.

Pupils were finally asked to contemplate one question: how will history remember us? Brexit is just one example of the history around us which will define our generation.

Frederika G – visit to Houses of Parliament

By Miss R jordan15th February 2019

Last week, Frederika visited the Houses of Parliament, with her dad. She wrote a piece on the experiece:

On Wednesday 6th February, my dad and I, took the train down to London to go see the Houses of Parliament. We were fortunate enough to be able to watch the politicians debate and the Prime Ministers Question Time.

However getting inside the houses of Parliament was difficult. We went through security similar to the airport. We were checked about 3 times and given special passes which showed we had been checked and were allowed inside. No pictures were allowed once inside. Before we went into the House of Commons, we saw the speaker’s procession and the Mace being escorted into the house of commons. Seeing the Black Rod carrying the Mace was extremely exciting as parliament cannot officially start without it.

Before we entered we were given clear instructions on what not to do.

No:
-signs of support towards a party.
-food/drink
-photography

Once we were seated in the House of Commons behind a clear bullet proof screen, the debate began. To start, they talked about issues in the NHS and mental health of children. Then it progressed onto the Prime Ministers Questions. Unfortunately Theresa May was unable to make it, as she was negotiating deals in Ireland. The PMQ’s were mostly about the popular subject of Brexit. Although I didn’t understand everything they were saying it was funny to watch the politicians act like children by mocking and mimicking each other when someone said something they didn’t agree with. After PMQ’s the debate moved onto local questions, where a MP can ask for guidance or help with something in there constituency.

At the end of the debate we were given back our jackets and bags, and we exited through the great hall and gift shop. When we left parliament, outside was full of protesters against leaving or staying in the EU.

Overall it was an amazing experience I would love to do again.

Phoebe’s crop for charity

By Miss R jordan13th February 2019

Kind-hearted Year 11 pupil, Phoebe Phillips, recently transformed her appearance by having a massive 12 inches of her hair cut off in aid of ‘The Little Princess Trust’. They take donations of hair and transform them into wigs for young people going through treatment where hair loss occurs, primarily chemotherapy.

Phoebe said,

At first I was just planning on having 6 inches taken off, but when I found out more about the charity and how they needed long hair donations, I decided to take the plunge and double the amount of hair I was donating

Well done Phoebe for this compassionate gesture.

Rosie is a champ in the water!

By Miss R jordan12th February 2019

Rosie Ward in Year 8 swims for Redditch Swimming club and has done for several years. She’s one of the younger swimmers in her age group so has always competed against older girls. Rosie’s very competitive and whether she’s competing in a swimming competition, playing county cricket or netball she has the drive to do her best.

This weekend she competed in County finals and won two silver in the 100m and 50m breaststroke finals (even though she’s the youngest in the U14 age group!). She qualified 6th fastest in the 100m breaststroke and 4th fastest in the 50m breaststroke. She won her heat with a personal best time 4 seconds better than her last time and entered the finals race in silver medal position. Rosie went onto to get the silver medal gaining another personal best.

Due to other sporting commitments (County cricket!) and a shoulder injury over christmas her training has been limited although she normally puts in about 5 hours training per week in the pool.

She will now represent the club at the Midland finals later this year.

Congratulations Rosie!

London trip – Theatre review

By Miss R jordan8th February 2019

This week, our pupils were taken to London to see a performance of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, the National Theatre’s highly acclaimed production based on Mark Haddon’s award-winning novel, at the Piccadilly Theatre, in the West End.

You might well ask what prompts teachers and support staff to volunteer their personal time to drive a minibus to London to see a play, on a ‘school night’?, well our trip to London this week was one I shall personally remember for a very long time and for all the right reasons.

Having secured parking in Bloomsbury for the buses (not an easy feat!), we walked to the Piccadilly Theatre, before heading through China Town to Covent Garden for a quick bite to eat before the show. Back at the theatre, having secured the best seats in the house (for a fraction of the normal price!), we were treated to personal waited service for food & drinks throughout the evening.

The show was exceptional, and follows the story of Christopher Boone’s search for the killer of his neighbour’s dog, Wellington. The central characters are Christopher, his teacher Siobhan, dad Ed and mum, Judy, with all the other characters being played by a further six cast members. There was very clever use of visual projections, drawings, further cast members and boxes constantly being re-purposed into different props to support the narrative.

The play deals with autism spectrum condition. At its centre is a young boy, who is more at home with maths problems and geometric logic than comprehension of human emotion and empathy, a boy with a brilliant mind, but totally unaware of what’s going on with the people closest to him.

The GCSE requirement that our drama students must have viewed a piece of live drama as part of their ‘Live Theatre Evaluation’ (part of their exam consists of two questions requiring students to analyse and evaluate a live theatre performance they have seen). I can only imagine that with this epic piece of theatre reverberating around our student’s heads, they will enter their final exams ahead of the pack.

My thanks to Miss Hinde, Curriculum Area Lead for Performing Arts, for not only researching and finding this play, but for her tireless effort to secure the best outcome for our pupils.

So returning to my original question, ‘what makes staff volunteer our personal time?’… it’s the wonderful pupils and teachers at our school and the knowledge that we are providing the best stimulus for our pupils to be inspired and succeed, when it comes to exam time.

Mock exam results

By Miss R jordan4th February 2019

On 24th January, as part of the Year 11 PD day programme, Year 11 students received their envelopes with their mock exam results.

This gave the students the experience of receiving results in a slightly more formal setting in the gym and sharing them with other students, while enjoying drinks and biscuits.

Staff were on hand to share with this experience and offer advice and information about the results. Well done Year 11s, you should be encouraged by the results and now have a plan for the rest of the academic year before GCSE exams start.

Studley High School – Back in Time

By Miss R jordan1st February 2019

Today, we are delighted to launch our ‘Back in Time’ project, on the school website.

After over 18 months of research, we have been in contact with hundreds of former pupils, from 1950s to 2010s, all of whom have shared their experiences (and some photos!) to celebrate their time here at school.

This project has uncovered the most incredible stories from MBEs to fame, all thanks to those that once wore the maroon uniform and school crest with pride. Stories come from pupils who enrolled between 1952 – 2012.

We also have a former staff section and former pupil association, both of which are works in progress. Finally, we have a Gallery section, for you to enjoy – how things used to be.

Pupils speak at Holocaust Memorial

By Miss R jordan1st February 2019

As part of our role as a Holocaust Beacon School, we were delighted to be invited to Redditch and Bromsgrove’s Holocaust Memorial Day event. This yearly event is to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) (27 January) which is a national commemoration day dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in The Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. It was first held in January 2001 and has been on the same date every year since. The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union in 1945, the date also chosen for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and some other national Holocaust Memorial Days.

The day began with a procession through Redditch Town Centre to remember those who suffered under persecution and genocides. The procession paused briefly at the Holocaust Memorial with poems and a short introduction from Sokphal Din, a Cambodian genocide survivor. We then made our way back to the Redditch Town Hall to begin the official event. There were performances from Redditch Community Gospel Choir, Matchborough First School Choir, Kerala Cultural Association and Ipsley Middle School. Guests also delivered readings based upon the lives of those who had been persecuted during the 21st century. The event brought together diverse groups from around Redditch to help celebrate our different cultures and experiences and how this is a huge benefit to the human race.

This year, as a Holocaust Beacon School, we were invited to talk about our experiences.

Lily Satchwell (Year 11), Katie Saunders (Year 11), Shannon Alcock (Year 11), Alice Hurcombe (Year 10), Libby Harding (Year 9) and Jessica Harley (Year 9) all delivered a review of our work as a Beacon School, before finishing with a poem for reflection on the events of the Holocaust. Here is an extract of their speech:

By exploring such stories, we begin to see the complexities in such a story. There is no one narrative that can be told as it affected such a wide population. Hence, we cannot explain it simply. There are troubling truths which we must take and evaluate in modern society. It wasn’t just the Nazis but the collaborators in the majority of Western and Eastern Europe that helped this happen. This is a lesson we must not forget. No one can afford to stand by and to stay quiet. We must not stand by and actively be loud about challenging prejudice and discrimination in society at every level. As we learn, genocide doesn’t start with mass killing but a classification of “us and them”, which still exists in society today.

The lessons and questions raised by being a Beacon School are not easy to answer but allow for reflection. Only last year, in partnership with the Anne Frank Trust, we exhibited a story on Anne Frank’s life from her early life in Germany until her discovery in Amsterdam. Something which stood out for us which was the refusal of refugee by many different countries, many different times. Who knows what would have become of Anne Frank and her family should she have lived? This is the kind of loss from society which we must live with.

Our journey as a Holocaust Beacon School has only just begun and we intend to keep being loud for better Holocaust education across the county and beyond. Sadly students across the country still have huge misconceptions across the Holocaust which must be challenged and until we do this, the real value of Holocaust education may be missed.

We want to finish on a poem from Martin Niemoller

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Niemoller’s words sum up why it is so important to learn and study the Holocaust. Genocide doesn’t start with mass killing, it starts by people accepting a classification and remaining quiet. It is important that we speak out against hate at every opportunity and that we don’t stand by, that we be louder in order to help prevent future genocides but also to make the world we live in a more tolerant and diverse place to live.

The feedback received by our pupils was amazing and they were personally congratulated by the Mayor of Redditch. Many commented their words were the most powerful of the day, which is an incredible compliment.

“Your girls spoke very eloquently, and are an absolute credit to your school”

Each year has a different theme and this year it was “Torn from Home”. To finish the event we were lucky to hear the testimony from Sokphal Din. Sokphal was forced out of his home by the Khmer Rouge on 17 April 1975, he endured hard labour in the Killing Fields and eventually survived the Genocide in Cambodia by escaping to Thai refugee camps where he lived for seven years. He commented;

We knew that we’d never go back. We knew this is a lie. They just want to kill us. And we knew that we’d never see our father again. We kept hoping, but we knew that it’s impossible.

The girls did fantastically well and spoke so passionately about such an important subject and gave up a majority of their Saturday to do so! Such enthusiasm, commitment and passion is testament but hopefully an inspiration to others to #belouder about prejudice and discrimination in society so we can truly say #neveragain.

Pheasant Learning in Food Tech

By Miss R jordan25th January 2019
This week, our Catering Manager, Mr Prince came support to an extra curricular Food Masterclass to show Year 11 pupils how to bone and fillet a pheasant.
Pupils removed the legs, learning where to split them into a thigh and drumstick and breasts as well as learning to find the scallop on the base of the pheasant (which is a delicacy!)
Mr Prince showed pupils how to season the breast with salt, pepper and herbs and pan fry in butter. The feedback was, ‘very tasty’!
Over the next two weeks, our Year 10 groups will be boning pheasant and making a selection of dishes. Next week, we have a visiting butcher from a local butcher shop supporting the Year 10 pupils. Watch this space for images of the dishes produced!

Year 10 to the RSC

By Miss R jordan25th January 2019

Last week, Mr Rushton, Mr Hobbis, Mrs Evans and Mrs Dudley accompanied 50 Year 10 pupils to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford to watch a live production of ‘A Christmas Carol’.

This was an important chance for pupils to see a live performance of a set text they are studying as part of their English Literature course.
Taking on the role of miser Ebenezer Scrooge, for the first time, was the actor Aden Gillett.

Returning to play Scrooge’s long suffering clerk, Bob Cratchit, was the actor Gerard Carey. He received the biggest laugh of the night after finally giving vent to his pent-up feelings on Scrooge’s mean spiritedness when he thinks he’s been sacked – only to return when he belatedly realises his employer is actually giving him a raise.

Charles Dickens made an appearance, which gave the students some insight into the social and historical context.

Afterwards, Year 10 pupil Ella Hawkesford commented: “It was a great production, with an original twist. I particularly liked the innovative staging and brilliant performances.”

James runs to success

By Miss R jordan24th January 2019

Huge congratulations to James Mucklow, finishing 3rd in the Warwickshire County cross country this week, representing Studley High School.

He now goes on to the National Championships #teamJames

James started Cross Country, after being entered for his first competition by us, in November 2018.

Since then he’s grown from strength to strength and now trains 3 times a week with the Stratford Triathalon Club. James is also a keen swimmer and the two skills means he often competes in Aquathons (his next one is in Feb).

The National Championships are in March and James will compete against Y10-Y13s from across many counties. We wish him the best of luck!

ASPIRE Launch

By Miss R jordan21st January 2019

Last Wednesday, parents of our ASPIRE pupils came to school for the Parent Launch of our new ASPIRE programme for which 27 students in Year 7 & 8 have been specifically selected to join.

Extra-curricular activities already on offer at Studley were discussed, the opportunity for peripatetic music lessons, attendance, house points and negatives were also shared with parents/carers – driving conversations with their child about their performance so far this year

ASPIRE pupils then spent time with their parent/carer reviewing personalised targets suggested by their teachers and summarised 3 key targets they would like to work on. They completed their target card together and from Monday 21st January for a 2 week period, they will strive to reach all 3 targets. This will be monitored and reviewed by the pupil and their tutor/parent daily. The target will then be refreshed for another 2 weeks, with the final review being completed before the end of this half term.

The ASPIRE programme will continue to communicate with parents regularly throughout this academic year and support their child with their confidence, resilience and independence.

SHINE design for Neighbourhood Plan

By Miss R jordan17th January 2019

Studley residents and Parish Councillors are currently working on the development of the Neighbourhood plan. This plan is designed to better shape the place local residents work, live and help influence the type, quality and location of the development, ensuring that change brings with it local benefit.

As part of SHINE at Studley High School, our students were invited to design the front and back cover for the Studley Neighbourhood Plan.

Below are two fantastic designs submitted by Jacob Tagg (Year 7) and Harriet Tracey (Year 8). The aim of the design was to depict Studley past, present and future, so this involved our students researching the history of Studley. Both students stand a chance at having their design selected and will be awarded gift vouchers if successful. Well done so far Jacob and Harriet!

This week, our Y7 rugby team enjoyed their introduction to ‘tackling’, supported by Jamie Southwell from the Worcester Warriors.

Severe Weather Emergency Provision

By Miss R jordan9th January 2019

Please note: the temperature is predicted to drop below 0°C – many rough sleepers in the area will be stuggling with the cold. The Food Department, pupils and teachers at Studley High have made use of some donated ingredients and practised their knife skills to make some homemade soup and donated bread rolls for anyone staying at the Redditch Salvation Army on Ipsley Street tonight.

The Severe Weather Emergency Provision (SWEP), operated by CCP on behalf of Redditch Borough Council, provides emergency shelter for rough sleepers on any night that the weather turned freezing from now until the end of March.

The SWEP is being held at the Salvation Army building on Ipsley Street, Redditch. Please point rough sleepers in that direction. If you wish to alert CCP, who operate the SWEP, to the existence and location of a rough sleeper you can do so by contacting Jayne on 07715 632088. Jayne and a colleague are regularly in touch with any rough sleepers they find or of whom they are aware.
