For all parents and carers of pupils going on the Studley High Barcelona trip on 13th July, please read the below important information:
This week, our Y10 Photography students went to Birmingham City University in Birmingham to see the work of Art and Photography final year degree students and meet student ambassadors. They visited the beautiful Margaret St campus, where they saw Fine Art and Art & Design work, then went to the Parkside Building, seeing fantastic examples of work from students in Fashion, Photography, Interior Design and Architecture.
The trip was an opportunity for our Y10 pupils to see end of degree show work, speak to course leaders and ask questions about the rich variety of work they saw.
We were proud to read about Jacob in the Redditch Standard this week. Jacob Tipping in Year 8 and his friend are offering gardening services to elderly and disabled people in and around Studley this Summer, and doing it all for nothing.
Inspired by an American initiative, they have committed to reaching various milestones in the project and have started their support already. You can read about the challenge here:

Just before half term, our Year 7s created a stunning array of active volcanoes as part of a Science competition and as part of a homework task.
Our first set of images show the volcanoes in their ‘pre-erupted’ state, as displayed in school reception (close to the fire extinguishers of course!). What a beautiful collection.
The majority of working examples used one of two methods: Cola and Mentos or vinegar and bicarbonate. Methods of ‘eruption’ included a full working water feature using a pond pump and a blow up exploding balloon.
Our second set of images show the pupils ‘igniting’ their volcanoes with Mr Willett, Mrs Harris and Ms Haines. There were many winners, in a range of categories, chosen by the pupil leadership team.
Last weekend saw 14 Year 9 Bronze candidates and 5 Year 10 Bronze candidates heading from Shipston to Stow-on-the-Wold on their D of E Practice Expeditions.
This Wednesday 24th May, Studley High School welcomed Samantha May, an Australian International Netball player, currently playing for Wasps Netball in the UK Super League. Sam lead a coaching session on ‘driving space’ and ‘movement around the court’ with our Year 9 and Year 10 netball teams. These skills are very high level and will support the girls with GCSE P.E, especially with netball assessments.
The girls had a fantastic morning and learned so much from such an experienced sportsperson.

Mr Brooks held an assembly today with Year 10 focusing on Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the act of being in the present, not thinking about the past, not worrying about the future. Year 10 spent twenty calming minutes out of their busy day to focus on their breathing and meditation in the glorious sunshine.
Well done to all involved, here’s to being more mindful!
On Friday 28th April, 12 Year 10 Students with a keen interest in Physics attended a practical interactive study day at Aston University on the subject of Lenses and the application of Light.
After a very warm welcome from Jo Burrows and her Student Ambassadors, students were officially welcomed by the Head of the Applied Physics Department, and given a short introduction to the study of Physics at Aston University. Studley High School students then developed their practical skills during a hands-on ‘Practical Light and Lenses’ workshop. The workshop presented by Phil Jones deepened their understanding of reflection; refraction; real and virtual images; convex and concave lenses; ray diagrams and the human eye.
After a break for lunch our students took part in an ‘Optical fibres, lasers and modern communication systems’ presentation, exploring the physics behind optical, or photonic technologies used in modern day communication systems that underpin the internet. They discovered how these technologies allow massive amounts of information to be carried, which has not only shaped the world around us but may lead to exciting career opportunities for those who continue to study Physics.
Our students once again excelled in their representation of the school and would like to thank the organisers of the day for the opportunity given to them to extend their understanding of lenses and the application of light.

Chloe Szubinski, former pupil at Studley High school has hit the headlines recently, winning the ‘Toni & Guy First Year Assistants’ regional champion crown!
Chloe told us:
I began at Toni & Guy in April 2016 and I am so in love with my job. I am doing an apprenticeship which is hard work but learning on the job suits me and the way I learn.
On the 1st April I entered my first competition, where all the assistants from all over the UK compete against each other in different categories. There are 5 heats to begin with and I came first place in my category’ First Year Hair Up’.
I am the first assistant to enter and win from Toni & Guy Redditch since the salon has opened. In September I will be going to London for the final which is judged by the highest, most talented hairdressers in the company. Its all so exciting.
The students just need to remember the sky has no limits and you can do anything as long as you set your heart on it.

A few weeks ago, Miss Hughes organised for the Redditch Photographic Society to come in to Studley High and work with Y10 and Y11 GCSE students. It was a great opportunity for our students to see the work of an experienced, professional photographer, Stuart Lamb, Chairman of the society and critique his work with him.
As a result of such an invaluable session, we are setting up and planning further collaborative projects with the society. A great chance for our students to work with and learn from professionals within the community.
More information on the work of the society can be found here: http://www.redditchphotographicsociety.org.uk/index.php

Well done Libby!
As part of our schools careers programme aimed at raising aspirations and widening participation for pupils into higher education, some of our year 10 pupils visited Warwick University this week. The event was designed to enable pupils to gain insight into University of Warwick life and see what the university has to offer both academically and socially. The recruitment team presented to our pupils who also had the opportunity to question to a panel of university staff and meet representatives from the support services, accommodation and finance teams. Our pupils also met student ambassadors who introduced the tour around the campus facilities and buildings.
The aim of the visit, was to reach out to some of our pupils who may not have considered higher education. We believe that by introducing such opportunities to pupils will enable them to explore options and raise awareness of their potential, as well as the options available to them beyond Year 13.
Thank you to Mr Brooks for his support in the selection of the pupils and his time.
Careers Department
Pupils at Studley High met representatives from The Stratford Hotel and Stratford Manor this week, as part of our Careers education programme during National Careers and Apprenticeship week, this week.
Pupils learned about skills for employment in the hospitality industry, the various careers and qualifications available in this field and the history of the hotels in the Q chain. The representatives also explained the range of work experience opportunities available locally to the pupils, for their Year 10 work experience.
Pupils also gained insight into apprenticeships in the hospitality industry generally and progression within the UK and abroad.
Have a look at this montage of Year 11 GCSE practical exam work – looks DELICIOUS!
