Y10 visit to Birmingham Synagogue

By Miss R jordan6th December 2017

Year 10 are currently studying the practices and beliefs of Judaism. To help pupils understand and experience the Jewish religious culture first hand, they ventured to the Birmingham Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, in Birmingham City Centre.
The building was first built in 1855 and therefore iconic in the area. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed asking questions and were greatly received by the tour guide who complimented our students on their outstanding attitude.

The pupils were taken on a guided tour, enabling them to see the important features found within a Jewish place of worship including:

The Ark and the Torah
Every synagogue contains an ‘Ark’, which is a cupboard where the ‘Torah Scrolls’ are kept (these contain the text of the Hebrew Bible, or the Torah) and a desk from which to read the Torah.

The platform and the desk for Torah readings are called the ‘Bimah’ and were found at the centre of the building.

Our pupils were told how, at the proper moment in the sabbath service, the Ark is ceremonially opened, and the Torah scroll is carried in procession to the reading desk, unrolled to the reading chosen for the day and laid on the reading desk.

It is normal for everyone to stand whenever the doors of the ark are open.
The pupils saw the hebrew words of the ‘Ten Commandments’ written above the ark.

The Eternal Light
The pupils were shown the ‘Eternal Light’ (called Ner Tamid) hanging above the Ark.
This light is always burning, as a symbol of God’s presence.

Studley High School lights the skies

By Miss R jordan14th November 2017

Around 1600 people swarmed into the grounds of Studley High School last Saturday evening (11th November) to take part in a fireworks extravaganza.

The fireworks event was organised jointly by Studley High School and Studley Community Infant School.

Activities kicked off at 6pm, with live music by local band ‘Aftermath’ followed by a ‘Golden Ticket’ draw, before an incredible fireworks display at 7.15pm. This was then followed by raffle prize draws and closed with live music until close.

Caroline Maddock-Jones, of Studley High School PFA said: “Our aim in the Studley High School PFA is not only to raise much needed funds but also to give our children memories that will stay with them long after they have left school.  It was wonderful to see the whole community coming together to support this event and also raising money for charities as well as the PFA.

We worked together with the Guides, Scouts, British Legion and Studley in Business –  all pulling together to deliver a fantastic event that our pupils and the village will remember for a long time to come.”

The fireworks were supplied by 1st Galaxy Fireworks and were simply amazing.  Footage from a drone was taken by a former Studley pupil, Paul Blakemore and as well as some fabulous artistic shots by Studley High photographer Wendy Roberts.

Penny Kirk, of Studley High PFA said: “It was an incredible display, set off in time to music featuring artists that we have lost in the past 12 months – Prince, Bowie ending with an amazing display of purple fireworks to the classic Prince track, ‘Purple Rain.’

The PFA (Studley High and Infants Parents and Friends Association) raised over £3000, and over £1000 was raised for local charities: Studley public access defibrillator, Studley Royal British Legion and local Guide and Scout groups.

Hundreds of former Studley High pupils, still living in the area and attending the display, poured into the school to catch a glimpse of themselves in old whole school photos and look at how the building has changed!

Next year’s display will take place on November 10th 2018.

Y11 to National Archives, London

By Miss R jordan10th November 2017

On Wednesday 9th November, 24 Year 11 GCSE History students travelled down to London to visit the National Archives. This is the official archive of the UK government for England and Wales; and “guardian of some of the nation’s most iconic documents, dating back more than 1,000 years.”

Once they arrived, the students were given a fantastic induction to the archives and even had to wash their hands during the process in order to help preserve the original documents that they would be handling.

The morning session explored the question of “What was Elizabeth I’s personality like?’ and used original documents from the reign of Elizabeth in order to help explore this. The ‘Tidal Letter’ which Queen Elizabeth wrote to delay her travel to the Tower of London (by writing very slowly so the tide would go out and they would be unable to transport her via the Thames) was a real highlight with many students touching the exact same paper as Elizabeth I had done!

Students then explored other aspects of the archive and many were interested in how they could use the archive to explore their family history and even planned another visit for the summer with their families.

Students then washed their hands again and went to explore the question of ‘how much did the British government know about the Holocaust?’. This raised a lot of debate in the group as they explored telegrams, radio intercepts and reports received by the Foreign Office between 1942 and 1944. Opinion was still divided at the end of the day and debate even continued on the coach home.

The trip gave a real insight to the work historians do and how such differing views and interpretations can be taken from the exact same piece of evidence. Such skills will be vital for the students to continue to develop as they head towards the final exams and beyond in constructing arguments and analysing primary source material. Overall, it was a fantastic trip and the students were a credit to the school.

National Poetry Day

By Miss R jordan9th October 2017

To celebrate this year’s ‘National poetry day’, pupils across the school were invited to
submit poems on the theme of ‘Freedom’.
The number of entries was overwhelming and even exceeded last year’s tally. Once
the numbers had been added up, the final House standings were as follows:
4 th – Abbey
3 rd – Manor
2 nd – Castle
1 st – Priory
As well as being a House competition, the judges also selected the best two entries
to receive a £10 book token. We are delighted that the winners have given their
permission for their brilliant poems to be printed below:

Junior (year 7 and 8) winner – Macoi Zendel-Ellis

A man sets foot on the cold, wet grass
He cries out to the sky, home at last
He has found his freedom, he has found his will
But now he cries, now he shrieks
Because freedom for others he cannot fulfil.

He hears gunshots, he hears screams
The world is not what it seems
He may be happy, he may be full of glee
But many are merely free.

He hears screams of crying children,
Mean men trying to steal them
For human nature is dark and scary
So stay alarmed, stay very wary
Not all are free, not all are swell
So just be glad that you’re home and well.

Senior (year 9, 10 and 11) winner – Molly Watkins

Freedom
There was a girl who liked to run,
But she felt as if she weighed a ton.
It didn’t matter what anyone said

The feeling inside just spread and spread.
“You’re not good enough!” her mind would holler,
That thought was the one controlling her.
Again and again she would try to break free,
But it seemed, it was not meant to be.

Until one day that was in autumn,
She decided she wanted her freedom.
She looked at herself in the mirror,
And suddenly, everything became clearer.
For each freckle, each dimple, each mole she had,
She couldn’t help but feel glad.
As she stared, tears started falling,
And she could finally see she wasn’t appalling.

A small blue bird
A small blue bird sat in his cage,
Staring out aimlessly as he grows with age.
“Why must I stay here?” he said,
Thinking of better things to do in his head.
He fluttered on down to look at the lock,
But when he reached it, he was greeted with shock.
The door swung open, so he was free,
To see all the things he wanted to see.
He flew higher and higher, having so much fun,
Blissfully enjoying his days in the sun.

Y10 to Oxford University

By Miss R jordan28th September 2017

Studley Science, Maths and Careers worked together as part of schools widening participation in STEM, to enable a group of Year 10 pupils to participate in an Engineering workshop at Oxford University last week.

The session included, ‘Introduction to Engineering’ and an ‘Origami Engineering’ workshop. Oxford University provide such experiences for young learners, to nurture an academic interest in Engineering and allow them to experience real life applications of an exciting area in Engineering. Their intention is to sparked interest in studying engineering at University.

My day at Oxford University taster session was amazing! I had lots of support, which was helpful when tackling each challenge! I loved learning new things and getting an insight into Engineering through further education. I also met new friends along the way. I look forward to studying engineering later on in life.

Carter Haywood

It was an incredible experience; it has widely broadened my view on the possibilities of Engineering. Definitely a career I will look into in the future and something to help with the application of Maths.

Maxwell Hicking

This collaboration with Oxford University has resulted in further developments for our pupils. Oxford University have indicated they will gladly use our school as a hub for future workshops in the Warwickshire area to support local schools.

By Miss R jordan26th September 2017

We’re delighted to announce that one of our Year 11 pupils, Mercedes Anderson has managed to obtain a place on ‘The New Mini Medical School’ which is a health education series, featuring a different aspect of medicine each week. Pupils will learn about medicine from medics at The University of Birmingham.

Designed for pupils considering applying to Medical School, this programme gives them the opportunity to get a taster of the range of topics covered in Medical Education.

Achieve Conference Year 11

By Miss R jordan25th September 2017

On Friday 15th September, 50 Year 11 pupils headed to the University of Birmingham for their annual ‘Achieve Conference ‘.

The Achieve Conference focus was to get students to learn about the importance of their GCSE qualifications, what Russell Group universities look for and what sixth forms and colleges expect from pre-16 students.

The messages from the day are deliberately designed to make students aware that Year 11 is a time that they need to focus their efforts and minds in order to achieve their target grades, if not to exceed them.

University staff talked students through the application process and what life at university would be like. It also involved ‘top tips’ for the GCSE season and ‘achieving your best’. Talks and tours from current university students completed the day.

It really made me realise how importance GCSEs are now and that an incredibly amount of Universities are looking at these results not just A-Levels.

I had never had given much thought to University before. I now know it’s something I want to pursue. The students told us about university life, the different societies you can join and about the nightlife!

Studley High Open Evening a Great Success!

By Miss R jordan15th September 2017

On the 14th September, we saw an unprecedented amount of people come to our school to find out what we do, how we do it and how it will benefit their children.

Parents, carers and families were invited to join us for tours of the school, interactive subject based activities, fun in the labs, the gym, art studio, music rooms and a tour of the school, led by our own pupil tour guides.

They could then enjoy refreshments and hear from our headteacher, former pupils and current pupils who had only just joined us this September.

The event, set to start at 6.15, saw people arriving much earlier, leaving our car park full by 6.30pm!

As people arrived, they were greeted by our pupil leadership team and handed a bag of goodies and information. The hall was packed out, with standing room at a premium at the back and a queue of people waiting to enter in reception.

Feedback from those who attended, already indicates that people were impressed with what they saw, the enthusiasm shown by our staff and pupils and the potential for their child or children:

Just to let you know that we attended the evening session.

The school was excellently presented and everyone involved should be very proud of the work they put in.

We were guided round by one your pupils who was well spoken and knowledgeable and this combined with the variety of interactive events around the school meant our daughter and son both loved the visit.

And this email received the following day:

Dear staff, I just wanted to convey our thanks for the wonderful tour and open evening we had last night at your school. The 2 Year 11 girls who showed us around couldn’t have done any better job of making us feel welcome and answering all of our questions (and there were many). As soon as we entered the foyer we could tell that the students were proud to be members of the Studley high school community and all staff we interacted with were so positive about all aspects of curriculum, pastoral care and the leadership of the school; there was a real sense of collaboration between staff and students.

As a deputy head myself I would hope that parents left my school feeling as my wife and I did last night. And we are sure that if our daughter is successful in gaining a place at Studley she would be well cared for and extremely happy.

Former pupils Michael Parry and Beth Wigham came back to Studley High to talk to our visitors about their time at school.

Michael said:

From the day I started at Studley High, I couldn’t have imagine standing here in front of a future cohort. I’m so proud to have spent the best time of my life so far in this very building and be able to encourage the future of Studley High to take every opportunity given to you as I have tried to over my 4 years. Beth and I had the honour of holding the positions of deputy head boy and girl in year 10 and 11, and, in doing so received so many opportunities to help the Studley community, and uphold Studley values.

I must admit that my greatest achievement here has been my results amongst the class of 2017. On results day, I was proud to get 5A*s, 3As and 2Bs, including my 9 in maths, putting me in the top 3% in the country. I have now moved to St Benedict’s Sixth Form to complete my International Baccalaureate Diploma studying English Literature and Language, Maths, Biology, Spanish, Business Management and an online course in economics…

So, why should your child come to Studley High School? Three words, opportunity, community and care.

Beth Wigham said:

Studley High School has shaped my very perspective on life from the first day I stepped on the school grounds on the 24th of February 2015. On my first day I was increasingly aware that at this stage of the school year friendship groups were firmly in place and i truly dreaded that I would not make many, if any friends. But now, just over two years later I’m so proud to be apart of a cohort that have collectively achieved the best GCSE grades in the school’s history, whilst making so many amazing memories here. Together.

Not only am I overwhelmingly delighted with my year groups achievements, but i am also ridiculously pleased with my own results. This year I was one of only 2000 students across the UK to attain the new grade nine, equivalent to an A** in my favourite subject English Literature. But there’s no way I could have done that on my own; not only do i owe a tremendous deal of thanks to the english department, but also every member of staff who organised revision sessions, resources and even more help than I could have imagined possible previously. Thanks to all of OUR hard work I’m now an Alcester Grammar sixth form student, studying History, Theatre Studies, Psychology and of course English Literature.

Behind the numbers and statistics, behind the policies and leaderboards in an increasingly competitive world, Studley High School teaches the values that many institutions cannot; compassion, appreciation, commitment, integrity and optimism. Values that we all, in this day and age could benefit from adhering to, which is why I couldn’t possibly imagine a better school to recommend to each apprehensive parent in this room tonight….

you will leave here having made relationships that last you a lifetime, and surprisingly, it’s not always with your peers.

Current Year 7 pupils, Elizabeth Foxall and Freddie Hunter said:

We came to two separate induction days where we got to know the school, teachers and where some of the classes were.  We also got to know some of the older pupils who were showing us around and helping us with anything we needed. We had ‘taster’ lessons where we found out more about different subjects and got a feel for how lessons would be when we moved up. We baked cupcakes, made rockets and had a competition to see whose rocket would fly the highest.  It was great fun and helped us all to feel comfortable about changing schools.

GCSEs 2017 – best results ever!

By Miss R jordan1st September 2017

Quite simply, it has been a delight to celebrate the successes of Studley High School pupils’ GCSE results this year. The class of 2017 have achieved the best results in the school’s history, even when set against the backdrop of educational reform. We would like to congratulate all of our pupils on their efforts in ensuring they did the best they could.

The overall results are fantastic with almost 90% of pupils achieving a pass in English and over 80% achieving a pass in Maths. These are excellent results and mean that 78% of pupils achieved a pass in both English and Maths. Perhaps the most telling figures are those demonstrating that across all faculties GCSE A*-C grades have improved further or remained strong. In the arts subjects with Art, Photography, Music and Drama pupils averaged 90% A*-C grades. In Science where over 50% of the cohort sat Triple Science GCSEs we have Biology on 100% A*-C and Chemistry and Physics with 99% and 96% A*-C respectively. The record results continue in Humanities with almost 85% of pupils achieving A*-C in Religious Studies (with almost 150 entries!), 75% A*-C in Geography and in History where 25% of pupils achieved A and A* grades and performed above national results.
In the Technology and IT subjects, pupils have performed very strongly with 100% A*-C grades in Food Technology and also in Catering and the majority of pupils achieving A*-C in Resistant Materials. Business Studies pupils celebrate almost 85% A*-C grades.
In languages the 100% A*-C grades continue in German and French results are over 70% A*-C. Pupils have also performed well in PE where almost 80% achieved A*-C grades.
It is such a  pleasure to see the strength of performance across a broad curriculum. This can be seen in the fact that 24% of all grades were A or A* and over 50 pupils achieved at least 3 A/A* grades.
In terms of individual successes we have some very high attainers. For ease of comparison we are reporting GCSE grade 8 as A*
Congratulations to:
Eleanor Sutton Smith in achieving 5A* and 5A grades
Michael Parry for achieving Grade 9 in Maths, 4A*grades, 3A grades and 2Bs
Madeline Ritchie for achieving Grade 9 in Maths, 3A* grades, 5A grades and a B
Chloe Burborough for achieving a grade 9 in English, 3A* grades, 4A grades and 2 Bs; Rosalie Oakes for achieving a Distinction in Music, 2A* grades, 6A grades and a B
Rachel Herbert for achieving 3A* grades, 5A grades and 2 B grades
Olivia Rambini for achieving 2A* grades, 7A grades and a B
Emily Saunders  for achieving 1A* and 9A grades
Mollie Rycroft Stanley for achieving 2A* grades, 6A grades and 2 B grades
Alex Hopkins for achieving 1A*, 7A grades and 2 Bs
Eleanor Duffy for 8A grades, 1 B and 1C
Hattie Runacres for achieving 1A*, 7As, 1B and a C
Katie Nyul for achieving 3A* grades, 4A grades
Georgia Bowling for achieving 2A* grades, 5A grades and 3 B grades
Bradley Usher for achieving 1A*, 6A grades and 3Bs
In terms of progress made since year 7 and GCSE results the following pupils have also performed superbly:
Harry Watkins achieved Grade 5 in English Literature a distinction in IT, 1B, 5Cs and a 3 across other subjects
Jennifer Williams with 1A*, a distinction, 2As, 2Bs and 2Cs
Megan Walton with 5As and 5Bs
Alice Ingleby achieved 1A*, 6 Grade Bs and 3Cs
Sophia Musgrove with 3A*s, 2As and 5Bs
Obviously, it will take a couple of months to get the final picture as there are always remarks and further breakdowns to look at but that will only add further to a wonderful set of results.
Once again, well done to all of year 11. You worked hard and deserved to do brilliantly. The overall results are absolutely amazing!

Year 9 to Warwick University

By Miss R jordan14th July 2017

A group of our Year 9 pupils visited Warwick University this week, as part of our careers education programme between Science and Careers, with the aim of widening participation into STEM subjects and career pathways.

The faculty of Science and Survival held an event with six interactive sessions for pupils ranging from Engineering, Fake News, Error Correcting Code, Grabbing around and From Rails to Reactors.

Is Maths Science?

Pupils were engaged in all sessions and interacted with the professors and ambassadors from the University. Pupils learned the difference between various science disciplines and had the opportunity to try out subjects they might not have encountered before.

From a careers profession point of view, I found the whole day very informative which developed my understanding further of higher education routes and the demands in an ever- changing world.

On the 7th July, 140 year 11s attended their ‘Leavers Prom’ with all the glitter and glam that exists at a Hollywood gala! The night got off to a exciting start as the creative vehicle choices started arriving at the Abbey hotel, Redditch.

Architects build a picture for our students

By Miss R jordan6th July 2017

As part of our careers education programme and skills for employment initiative, pupils from across all year groups welcomed Mike Brabb from Masefield Architects, to Studley High, for a presentation on the role of an architect and future career prospects in architecture.

Mike presented to over thirty two pupils and discussed his own career entry as well as progression within the industry. He also covered the skill set required for the role which includes: design and drawing skills, a methodical, logical approach, analytical skills, excellent Maths skills, communication and negotiating skills and IT skills.

Mike explained how the use of art was integral to the role.  Pupils then had the opportunity to see some of the drawings of Masefield Architects and Mike’s architectural work.

Feedback from some of the pupils:

I found it useful to know about the role and where the actual work is for you to be able to earn higher income.

I found the drawings insightful and now understand why art would be relevant, as well as maths and physics

Y8 bury the present

By Miss R jordan5th July 2017

Inspired by the book ‘1984’ by George Orwell, Y8 English pupils created and filled a time capsule and buried it on school grounds, whilst considering visions of the future and the reactions of those who might find it 40 years from now.

On-site reporter, Tom Gould, wrote this piece at the event:

“Who would have thought that digging a hole would be so tough?

We have just finished studying ‘1984’ by George Orwell, which was a prediction of the future. This book was the inspiration for us all.

Miss Higgs and Mrs Campbell encouraged us to bury a capsule and think about what the contents could mean to those who uncovered it.”

Latesha on the road to Wimbledon

By Miss R jordan30th June 2017

Studley High Y8 pupil Latesha Grant had the chance to join Andy Murray at the world-famous Wimbledon venue when she recently took part in the HSBC Road to Wimbledon Midlands Regional Qualifier at Billesley Tennis Centre in Birmingham.

Latesha was playing for a spot at the National Finals of the HSBC Road to Wimbledon 14 & Under Challenge at the All England Club between August 14 and 19.

Latesha, who trains at Redditch HDA Tennis Club, is adamant we have not seen the last of her after losing out 5-7 0-6 to Talia Neilson-Gatenby in the second round.

“I’d give myself a five or six out of ten for how I played,” she said. “It was a tight first set, pretty neck-and-neck and I’m quite happy with how I played in it.

“I was attacking a lot and hitting the ball deep, but it was tough to recover from the last game of that set.

“I’ve played in the county version of this event before and came second overall. This is my first year playing in this and hopefully I’ll be back again next year.

“My mum was looking through a newspaper and then found the tennis club. I just started to join for fun when I was four years old and now I do it competitively.”
