Cyber-bullying Presentation

By Miss R jordan17th October 2018

Last week, Calum Foad came to talk to our Y7 pupils about cyber bullying.

“Calum Foad – You & I”

This program has toured to more than 4,500 schools around the UK and Ireland, with a mix of different artists who’ve had outstanding reviews. The pupils watched a unique and entertaining performance from Calum, followed by a Mental Health / Online Safety educational message.

The main message of the presentation was to empower pupils to make the right choices with online safety and encourage them not to discriminate and treat everyone fairly. He discussed  mental health and well-being, with the intention to instill confidence in our pupils, and to speak about their state of mind, tools to recognise when to reach out and who to talk to.

Calum is a 21 year old singer / songwriter from Berkshire and has been tipped by BBC’s Radio 1 as the next big British male singer being compared to Olly Murs. Calum has been singing and playing guitar for over 10 years, last year supported McBusted on tour and will soon be heading off to LA to work with some huge songwriters.

Hockey Star in Y10

By Miss R jordan16th October 2018

Year 10 pupil, Luke Baker is making a name for himself in the world of hockey.

He is currently part of the England Hockey Performance Centre programme, which is an elite player programme that develops players for national age group and GB hockey.

Players are nominated to attend a Performance Centre by their Academy Centre. Players can be nominated from the U15 and U17 age groups and attend a tough selection day to progress to the Performance Centre level. There are only 300 players nationally at this level at 17 different performance centres and Luke’s goal is to be selected for the Futures Cup squad in August 2019.

The Futures Cup is the pinnacle of the Elite Player Pathway and for many of the players it will be their first experience of an intense tournament-style competition on this scale. Each region battles battles it out in their respective age group for a chance to be crowned the champion. National age group squads are selected from this process.

Luke plays club hockey at Redditch Hockey Club and plays in the Men’s 3rd team as well as playing as an invited guest player in the Tier 1 U16’s National League competition for Stourport Hockey club.

Good luck Luke!!

Year 7 Kingswood Residential

By Miss R jordan8th October 2018

At the end of September, staff accompanied Year 7 pupils to a 3 day residential trip to Kingswood in Staffordshire.

Kingswood residential encourages the development of life skills and helps everyone to reach their full potential in a way that’s inclusive and puts personal development at the core of what we do. Through taking young people out of the classroom, we believe that school residentials have the power to make the primary and secondary education experience more real, more tangible and even more memorable.

Kingswood website

Obstacle course, zipwire, archery, climbing, crate stack, making their own low ropes course, orienteering, nightline and aeroball. Also lots of football, songs and games, made for a non stop action packed few days! Studley values were demonstrated throughout our stay; ‘aspirational’, ‘resilient’, ‘mature’, to name just a few!

All 39 students who attended Kingswood were polite, courteous, worked well as a team and really pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and tried new things. Everyone supported one another, listening to any problems and helping each other to find solutions to beat their fears and achieve. This extended from climbing the very realistic rock face, making new friends, through to eating new food!

Mrs Wakefield, Dr Barnfield and Mr Willett were very pleased to see everyone say thank you for their food, clean up after every meal, and represent Studley High School with the “aiming higher” motto we expect.

We also enjoyed Toby’s birthday whilst we were there, having cake both on Thursday AND Friday! All students took time out to write many cards to Kingswood activity leaders, thanking them for their enthusiasm and hard work in providing such enjoyable activities.

I really enjoyed myself and loved all the activities….the food was great and so were all the staff there. I thoroughly enjoyed the activities….especially doing the nightline, zipwire and the obstacle course in the dark because it was much more fun if you’re afraid of heights, you can’t see how high up you are!

I loved it and would go back any day!

The History and Art departments have joined forces for this very special project and are inviting pupils from all year groups to take part.

The project will involve, producing a poppy display to remember those from Studley who lost their lives fighting in World War One.

A representative from Primary Engineers Programme told us:

All staff involved were very supportive and amazingly helpful. The children and the teachers really enjoyed the event, along with the venue. I feel, personally the children gained from the project.

Again, thank you ever so much for supporting us throughout. We truly appreciate it.

New Piano for Music

By Miss R jordan18th July 2018

This summer, the PTA at Studley High School purchased a new piano for the music department.

We had been in need of a new electric piano for some time and as they are expensive we thought we may have to wait a while longer. Luckily for us though, the PTA kindly agreed to fund the purchase of a new Roland digital piano which will be housed in the main Music room.

It has already been put to good use as it was delivered just in time to be played for the opening night of our recent ‘Grease’ production. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Kirk and the PTA for their fundraising efforts throughout the year which means that we now have a high specification digital piano that many students will benefit from playing in the years to come.

The Sixth Form students posed questions at the end of each presentation, to further challenge our students knowledge and then chose a first and second place.
A massive congratulations to Zac George, who was awarded first place and received a £20 ‘Love to Shop’ voucher, for his project “Why is 95% of the ocean still undiscovered?”.
Also, congratulations to Ellie Fisher, who was awarded second place and received a £10 ‘Love to Shop’ voucher, for her project “Do men deserve to get paid more in sport?”.
We were so impressed with all the students commitment to learning and their desire for further challenge. All students have developed their ability to research, write and critically analyse a given area. Congratulations!
Miss Dempster
Hopefully see you all in our sixth form sometime in the future. This is an excellent initiative and we’re delighted to be invited to it.

Future DJs

By Miss R jordan10th July 2018

This week, Yr 7 & 8 pupils were treated to a showcase performance today, thanks to Future DJs with guest DJ, Lisa Lashes.

Future DJs is an education business with a large social impact for young people supplying professional visiting DJ and Music Production tutors to schools nationwide (in the same way as traditional instrumental tutors).

Tutors deliver a unique programme of study created by professionals, starting at Key Stage 2 and running through to Key Stage 5, in accordance with the new AQA, OCR and Eduqas GCSE music specifications.

One of the key focuses of the organisation is simply to get more young people into music, and in turn more students taking GCSE and A-Level Music.

The ‘Pop Up’ Roadshow is highly engaging for students. Austin and Scott Smart came to Studley to show our pupils some DJing essentials. Lisa Lashes then showed off her mixing skills and some of our pupils were invited onto the stage to try the decks.

After the event, pupils registered their interest in joining our peripatetic programme, starting in September.

Here is the ITV news piece, from this week:

Off to see the Unis!

By Miss R jordan6th July 2018

The end of term is fast approaching, but that hasn’t stopped students visiting local universities. Last week, 13 Year 10 students visited Warwick University. They were shown around the campus by the student ambassadors, seeing the accommodation, various places to eat and the student union. They visited the library which is open 24 hours a day so you can study in the middle of the night!

This week saw 40 Year 9 pupils visit University of Birmingham. Like last week, it was a gloriously sunny day and showed the campus at it’s best. The pupils listened to a short talk about the university and what’s on offer, lots of interesting questions were asked. They then heard a student presentation on Microbiology and the harm caused to the environment by plastic.

A tour of the campus followed. The clock (Big Joe) is an iconic feature of the university – standing proud in the centre of the campus.

The pupils learnt lots of interesting facts about the university, the Disney Film ‘Monsters University’ has it’s campus based on Birmingham University and the Aston Webb building where the graduations take place, was shortlisted for Harry Potter, but missed out as it wasn’t big enough!

During the afternoon session, the pupils were split into teams and they had to develop an idea that would enhance the life of students at the university. After some initial head-scratching, the ideas started to flow. They worked together as a team and communicated well with each other and the student ambassadors, who were giving them guidance. Students produced mind maps and lego models of their inventions and then each team had to pitch to the rest of the groups and a winner was chosen.

Ideas included: water parks, a Spa and a bike on a zip wire! They were very creative and confident with their pitches. The bike on a zip wire won.

Both visits greatly inspired the pupils to think about their futures and the vast range of opportunities available to them.

Prince William Award

By Miss R jordan6th July 2018

All Studley pupils participating on the Prince William Award, welcomed a visit from Julie from the NightStop in Redditch last week.

NightStop provides emergency overnight accommodation for young homeless people who are facing a night on the streets or sleeping in an unsafe place.

Communities and charities run Nightstops in more than 30 locations around the UK, led and supported by the Nightstop team at Depaul UK.

Nightstop believe that no young person should sleep rough or have to spend the night in an unsafe place. Nightstop is a unique project which relies on community hosting to provide a safe, welcoming place for young people in crisis. Volunteer hosts, who are ordinary members of the community, open their homes to young people aged from 16 to 25 years, offering:

  • A private spare room
  • A hot meal
  • A shower
  • Laundry facilities
  • A listening ear

Pupils collected donations from Tesco of 12 duvet sets and toiletries including soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, antiperspirant and long-life food. These donations will help in the daily running and to set up new housing for young people in need.

Pupils then attended a graduation presentation where they presented their work this year , talked about what they had achieved and challenges they had overcome. The ceremony closed with certificates for the pupils and presentation of a plaque for school.

Studley to Westminster

By Miss R jordan6th July 2018

Studley High School is excited to be attending a Youth Debate at Westminster on Monday 9th July, organised by the national groups, the National Association of Teachers of RE (NATRE) and the Religious Education Council (REC).

Participation at this Youth Debate shines a light on the great efforts we are making to improve the awareness and understanding our young people have, of all faiths and beliefs, as well as highlight the effort and time taken into delivering high quality religious education to all of our students.

We’re working hard to equip all of our students for life in a diverse and multicultural society and by participating in this debate, with the support of our local MP, we’re showing just how important this aspect of education is to us.

Year 8 -History Big Quiz

By Miss R jordan5th July 2018

On June 26th, a group of Year 8 History students visited the University of Birmingham to take part in a ‘History Big Quiz’. This event aims to give students an introduction to History at degree level and University life in general.

Students were split into teams and took part in a mammoth quiz on all things history. Anything from mythology to famous black Britons was asked of the students! In between the rounds , students had a lecture from a History professor on the relevance of History to the world around us and how important it is to us in our lives today to understand how people in the past have lived, thought and behaved.

Dr Michell Chresfield gave a fascinating lecture on the history of trainers (or sneakers) and how they have evolved as an object. Not what you traditionally think of when talking about history but as she stated “everything around us has a history”.

All teams then went back to the quiz (following a lunch on the grass on the beautiful University campus) and competed valiantly. All teams represented the school very well with some extremely competitive groups emerging when the sweet prizes were announced. One of our teams picked up the prize for the best opening round and it is safe to say the sweets did not survive the journey back. As ever, the students were a credit to the school.

Matilda’s climb

By Miss R jordan5th July 2018

Year 7 pupil, Matilda Stone’s story:

In 2015 Matilda’s Grandad turned 70 and wanted to climb Snowdon before his birthday. He was going to climb with Matilda’s mum, who unfortunately, suffered a serious car crash, fracturing her spine and sternum and crushing her foot.

Matilda volunteered to go in her place and they made it to the summit and back down again in glorious sunshine!

Watching Cruft, she learnt about Veterans with Dogs and decided to fundraise for this incredible charity at the same time.

Matilda told us:

In 2015 my mum had a car crash. We all found it difficult to look on the bright side and to carry on without the fear of more car crashes happening. When we got our Beagle, Max, it helped us with the post anxiety and stress. It helped my mum get out of the house, my dad had something to distract him and my sister and me got on with life again because we had a friend to hug and to play with.

I’m climbing Snowdon again and raising money because I think Veterans with Dogs is a really important charity; it trains dogs so that veterans with PTSD can live a normal life without being too scared to go out of their houses. It takes £11,000 to train one dog, please donate as much as you can.

Matilda and her family started training in January with long walks up The Malvern Hills and chose a date in June for the actual climb.

The weather was against us, and half way up, the cross winds reached 30mph and we were absolutely drenched. But we carried on, eating lots of sweets! Just when things were getting really difficult, I heard the train, realised where I was e all kept going! Half an hour later we finally reached the summit.

2hrs and 15 mins later we arrived back at the bottom and have never been so pleased to see our car before – knowing there were clean, dry clothes in the boot!

We spent just over 6 hours on the mountain, have never been so wet or weather beaten in our lives.

Matilda’s mum said that Matilda and her sister were “total superheroes”.

We’ve raised enough money to send a veteran on a residential course organised by the charity who have sent HUGE thanks to both girls for their amazing efforts.

Induction Day

By Miss R jordan29th June 2018

Last week we invited Year 6 students from Tanworth-in-Arden CofE Primary School for a fantastic Induction Day at Studley High School. After being picked up in the school minibus they were greeted by Mr Rose who gave them an overview of their day.

They were given a brief tour of the school and then enjoyed a History lesson with Mr Hobbis where there were asked to investigate whether Emily Davidson’s death at Epsom Racecourse in 1913 was suicide or a political statement to support the Suffragette Movement. The students looked a range of primary and secondary sources to help make their final judgements.

During mid-morning, students had an engaging lesson with Mr Salmon and were provided with some basic resources to help make air compressed rockets. The Year 6 students then had a mini competition to see whose rocket could stay in the air the longest.

Some of the Year 6 students coming to us in September will choose whether they want to study Spanish, German or French, before they arrive.

To make the decision making process easier, Year 6 students from Tanworth-in-Arden CofE Primary, Mappleborough Green CofE Primary, Coughton CofE Primary, St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Webheath Academy attended an ‘MFL Taster Afternoon’ where they completed a carousel of 30 minutes in each language. The sessions allowed the students to see teaching styles, content and to experience each language, which they may not have encountered at primary school.

A fabulous start to the Year 6 Induction Days!

Ben catches a whopper!

By Miss R jordan28th June 2018

Year 10 pupil, Ben Tidmarsh was recently featured on the ‘Fisheries’ website after an amazing catch recently.

Keen fishing fan, Ben, proved that age is no barrier to catching a huge barbel (carp-like freshwater fish) at the River Avon.

Fisheries site reports:

Ben landed a 12lb specimen during an action packed day session with his uncle on the opening day of the 2018 season at Warwickshire’s Anchor Meadow fishery. Fishing three pegs down from the weir he bagged up on barbel and chub for a session most anglers would envy. His haul marked a return to the River Avon hotspot where he bagged up two years ago and first caught the barbel bug.

Ben has been fishing since he was little (mainly in ponds) but 3 years ago he tried river fishing and caught his first Barbel! On the river he catches Barbel and Chub.

Ben is progressing so well that he is regularly catching more fish that the expert fishermen on the river!

Congratulations Ben! That’s an incredible catch!
