The Studley High School Geography Department recently organized an unforgettable trip for our Year 10 and 11 students to the breath-taking landscapes of Snowdonia in North Wales. This immersive journey allowed our students to step out of the classroom and into the very landscapes they’ve been studying in lessons. From glacial terrains to rivers coursing through the upper reaches, this trip offered our young geographers a chance to connect theory with real-life experiences.
The primary goal of the expedition was to provide students with hands-on experience in the subject, teaching them valuable fieldwork techniques, data collection, and the art of presenting their findings. It was an enriching experience, bridging the gap between textbook knowledge and tangible exploration.
The adventure commenced on a thrilling note. Friday saw a visit to the Fforest coaster, the UK’s only alpine coaster. Students sped through the forest, twisting and turning along rails. It was an exhilarating experience, perfectly setting the tone for the trip. The highlight of the day, however, was the “Velocity 2” zipwire at Penrhyn slate quarry, located near Bethesda in North Wales. This magnificent quarry, with its 1.5km long zipwire, suspended high above a picturesque lake, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Students reached speeds close to 100 miles per hour!
Home away from home during this trip, was the Field Studies Centre, nestled in the heart of Snowdonia. Two evenings were dedicated to games and challenges in the Centre’s picturesque grounds, fostering camaraderie and team spirit among our students.
The second day was divided into two equally enthralling halves. While one group embarked on a gorge scrambling adventure, donning wellies and overcoats, the teams descended into a gorge and scrambled their way up, guided by experts. They navigated waterfalls, conquered rocks, and overcame various obstacles. The weather was on our side, and the stunning surroundings left an indelible mark on our students. The day’s other half was spent in Betws-y-Coed village, where students delved into the impact of tourism on the town and honed their fieldwork skills. This quaint village provided a beautiful backdrop for our educational pursuits.
As with any adventure, there was a challenge to overcome. On the final day, the weather took a turn for the worse, with relentless rain fall. Undeterred, the group pressed on to the glacial lake, Cwm Idwal. Although the clouds obscured the breath-taking scenery, our students displayed tremendous resilience and determination, scaling the hill to reach the lake.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our staff who volunteered their time over the weekend to accompany the group. We also want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our students, whose exemplary behaviour, good humour, and teamwork made this trip a resounding success.
In conclusion, the Year 10 and 11 Geography trip to Snowdonia was an unforgettable journey of exploration, adventure, and education. Our students not only learned about the wonders of the natural world but also discovered the strength of character within themselves. This trip served as a testament to the transformative power of experiential learning. We look forward to many more such educational adventures in the future.

Year 9 Student Lydia H Excels in the Netherlands: A Star on the Cricket Field
We are proud to share the remarkable achievements of one of our Year 9 students, Lydia H, who displayed exceptional talent and bravery during her trip to the Netherlands this half term. Lydia’s passion for cricket led her to train with not one but two different Dutch teams, and she even had the opportunity to play in a match alongside a third team!
During the highly anticipated match, Lydia’s performance on the field left spectators and teammates astounded. Despite battling nerves and stepping way out of her comfort zone, she showcased extraordinary bowling skills that proved instrumental in her team’s success. Out of only two wickets taken during the match, Lydia impressively broke the opening partnership. What’s more, the player she dismissed was none other than one of the opening batsmen for the Dutch international team!
Lydia’s ability to perform under pressure and make such a significant impact in the game is a testament to her dedication, talent, and sheer determination. It is clear that she possesses a natural flair for the sport, coupled with the courage to face challenges head-on.
The Dutch teams Lydia trained with were highly impressed by her skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout her time in the Netherlands. Not only did she excel on the field, but she also demonstrated remarkable character.
Her success has not only brought pride to herself but also to her school and community. Lydia’s achievement serves as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes and showcases the incredible potential within our student body.
When asked about her experience, Lydia expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to train and compete with talented Dutch teams. She acknowledged the support and encouragement she received from her coaches, teammates, and family, which played a crucial role in her success. Lydia hopes that her accomplishments will encourage other students to step out of their comfort zones, pursue their passions, and embrace the unknown.
We look forward to witnessing Lydia’s continued growth and success in her sporting endeavours.
At Studley High School, we believe in nurturing a spirit of compassion and service in our students. Today, we are delighted to share the inspiring story of Ryley and Austin Jackson, two exceptional young individuals from Year 8 and 9, who recently dedicated their entire weekend to supporting a charitable cause. Their selflessness and unwavering commitment deserve recognition and serve as a shining example for all of us.
On Saturday, May 20th, nearly 30 staff members embarked on an incredible journey from the Travis Perkins head office in Northampton to Leicester Royal Infirmary. The purpose of this challenging expedition was to raise funds for the Leicester Hospital children’s Cancer ward. The event held a special significance for one of their colleagues, whose two-year-old son is currently undergoing treatment for leukaemia at the hospital.
Ryley and Austin’s father played a pivotal role in organizing this charity event. In a heart-warming gesture, the two young brothers willingly sacrificed their weekend to help in the support van, ensuring the smooth progression of the walk. The support van acted as a beacon of assistance, providing refreshment breaks and carrying essential supplies and equipment along the arduous 36-mile route.
Despite the early start at 4 a.m. and not returning to the hotel until 8 p.m., Ryley and Austin showed remarkable perseverance and dedication throughout the day. Their responsibilities ranged from checking off walkers, coordinating with group members, to fetching and carrying food, drinks, and bags. Their tireless efforts made a significant difference in keeping the participants motivated and well-supported.
The commitment and passion demonstrated by all participants, including Ryley and Austin, have yielded tremendous results. At the time of writing this article, the event has raised a staggering £12,500, which will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of children battling cancer at the Leicester Hospital. The funds will contribute towards improving the facilities, providing vital treatments, and offering much-needed support to the young patients and their families.

Bronze Practice Expedition: A Memorable Adventure for Year 9 Students
Last weekend, Elmley Castle and its picturesque surroundings became the backdrop for an exciting Bronze Practice Expedition. This two-day adventure brought together nine teams, comprising over 50 enthusiastic Year 9 students. With a range of challenges and new experiences, the expedition proved to be a great success, leaving lasting memories for all involved.
The first test for these young adventurers was a 24-kilometer hike over the two days. Carrying their backpacks filled with essential supplies, the students embarked on a journey through stunning landscapes, immersing themselves in the beauty of nature. The bright sunshine throughout the weekend added a touch of warmth to their spirits, making the experience even more enjoyable.
As part of their team-building exercises, each group was tasked with cooking a meal together. This not only encouraged cooperation and coordination but also gave them a taste of independent living. Working together to prepare a meal not only satisfied their appetites but also nurtured essential life skills, such as planning, communication, and problem-solving.
After a long day of hiking, the campsite became a hub of excitement as the students engaged in a friendly game of rounders. Laughter and cheers filled the air as they displayed their athleticism and competitive spirit. These moments of recreation allowed them to unwind, forging stronger bonds among the team members.
However, the journey was not without its challenges. Along the route, a couple of the groups encountered a bees nest and had to fend off the buzzing intruders. This unexpected obstacle tested their resilience and resourcefulness, as they swiftly adapted to the situation, ensuring everyone’s safety.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this expedition was witnessing the positive attitude and high level of maturity displayed by all the students. Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn were evident throughout the weekend. They embraced the opportunity for personal growth, developing valuable life skills along the way.
Navigational skills proved to be a crucial lesson during the expedition. While some students faced initial difficulties, they quickly learned from their mistakes and improved dramatically on the second day. The practice and experience gained during this journey will undoubtedly prepare them for their upcoming qualifying expedition in June. With each step forward, they grew more confident in their abilities.
For a few of the participants, this trip marked their first experience of camping. The great outdoors became their temporary home, providing them with a newfound appreciation for nature and the simplicity it offers. They embraced the challenges of outdoor living, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings, and finding comfort in their own resourcefulness.
Similarly, for some students, this was their first time staying away from home. The expedition provided them with an opportunity to develop independence and self-reliance. Overcoming any initial homesickness, they discovered their own strength and resilience, laying the foundation for future adventures and personal growth.
This practice expedition was a journey of many “firsts” for the students involved. It allowed them to step out of their comfort zones, face challenges head-on, and grow both individually and as a team. The memories created will remain with them for years to come, serving as a reminder of their resilience and the power of pushing beyond their limits.
As the expedition came to an end, one student summed up the sentiment shared by many, saying, “Thank you, Miss, I have really enjoyed myself!” These words encapsulate the enthusiasm and gratitude felt by all the participants for the incredible experience they had been a part of.
The Bronze Practice Expedition served as an important milestone in the students’ journey toward their qualifying expedition in June. The skills they honed and the lessons they learned will undoubtedly contribute to their success in future adventures. The journey of self-discovery and personal growth has just begun for these young explorers, and with each step they take, they inch closer to becoming confident and capable individuals.
We extend our congratulations to all the students for their exceptional performance and thank the teachers and staff who organized and supervised this unforgettable experience. We eagerly await their next adventure and the incredible stories they will bring back from their qualifying expedition in June.
Exploring Nature’s Wonders: Geography Field Trip to Carding Mill Valley
Carding Mill Valley in Shropshire recently played host to two large Geography groups of our students, who embarked on an exhilarating adventure in the heart of nature. The students were greeted with kind weather and breath taking views, making their experience all the more memorable. This day-long field trip offered them the opportunity to witness first-hand the features of an upland river, while reinforcing their classroom knowledge.
The highlight of the excursion was the hike up to Lightspout waterfall, a picturesque cascade nestled within the valley. As the students made their way up, they were captivated by the magnificent scenery surrounding them. Lush greenery, towering hills, and the melodic sounds of nature created a tranquil ambiance. The weather gods were certainly on their side, with the sun shining brightly, casting a warm glow on the valley.
Upon reaching Lightspout waterfall, the students found the perfect spot to have a picnic lunch. They basked in the sunshine, enjoying their meals while marvelling at the majestic waterfall before them. This idyllic setting provided a unique opportunity for the students to observe the features of an upland river up close, reinforcing the concepts they had learned in the classroom.
With satisfied bellies and renewed energy, the students then divided into their teams to undertake their physical geography fieldwork study. This segment of the trip was designed to put their theoretical knowledge to the test and collect data to compare with geographical theories concerning river behaviour downstream.
Equipped with measuring tools and a sense of purpose, the teams diligently carried out their tasks. They measured the river’s velocity, width, and depth at various points along its course. This meticulous data collection allowed them to analyse how the river changes as it flows downstream. The students’ dedication and hard work were evident as they carefully recorded their findings, ensuring accuracy and precision in their measurements.
Engaging in hands-on fieldwork not only reinforced the students’ understanding of physical geography but also fostered teamwork and collaboration. The teams supported and encouraged one another, working together to overcome any challenges they encountered. This shared experience strengthened their bonds and demonstrated the importance of cooperation in the pursuit of knowledge.
As the day drew to a close, the students returned from their fieldwork with a sense of accomplishment. They had successfully gathered all the necessary data and were eager to analyse their findings in the classroom. The excursion to Carding Mill Valley not only provided a memorable experience but also offered an invaluable opportunity for the students to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
The Geography field trip to Carding Mill Valley was a resounding success, thanks to the favourable weather, stunning views, staff who supported and the students’ enthusiasm. It allowed them to witness first-hand the wonders of nature and apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world context. This immersive experience will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the students, instilling in them a passion for geography and a deeper appreciation for the remarkable landscapes that surround us.
We often hear stories of remarkable achievements that inspire us to push ourselves further, and today, we have the privilege of sharing the incredible journey of Sophia B, a Year 8 student who recently achieved her black belt, 1st Dan in Karate. Sophia’s dedication, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to her martial arts journey have led her to this remarkable milestone.
Sophia embarked on her martial arts journey back in 2017 when she first discovered the art of Karate. Initially, she trained at a local club for two years, but it was through other students attending seminars that she stumbled upon the Tividale Shotokan Karate Club (TSKC) in Oldbury. Recognizing that she was missing out on valuable experiences in her martial arts development, Sophia and her parents made the decision to join TSKC in 2019, despite the 25-mile round trip they had to make twice a week. This level of dedication is truly commendable.
TSKC stands out as a karate club that not only focuses on the Shotokan style but also emphasizes self-defense and practical application. Sophia’s training is centered around self-defense and applying her skills effectively, rather than participating in sport or competition. Alongside her physical training, she has embraced discipline, delving into the Japanese language and studying the rich history of this ancient art form.
Over the past four years, Sophia has worked tirelessly, honing her skills and preparing for the momentous occasion of her black belt grading. This process is known to be physically and mentally demanding, and Sophia approached it with unwavering determination. Months of blood, sweat, and tears culminated in an unforgettable achievement on May 11th, as Sophia successfully earned her black belt.
The examination itself was a rigorous test encompassing a two-hour physical assessment of fundamentals, kata (forms), partner drills, knowledge, and kumite (fighting). Sophia’s success in this examination is a testament to her hard work, discipline, and unwavering focus.
However, this is only the beginning of Sophia’s journey. As a newly minted black belt, she has a crucial role to play moving forward. Maintaining the high standards of her grade, setting new goals to improve her skills, mindset, and knowledge, and serving as a role model for younger students in the dojo are all responsibilities that Sophia takes on with utmost dedication. Her training schedule includes twice-weekly sessions, monthly seminars, and Saturday classes, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to personal growth and development.
Sophia’s achievements so far are a source of immense pride for her coaches, Steve Knight Sensei (4th Dan) and Les Knight Sensei (7th Dan). They are honoured to guide her journey and witness her remarkable progress. Sophia’s black belt is a testament to her resilience, passion, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
As Sophia herself knows, this is only the beginning of an exciting and challenging path. The journey continues, and with each step, Sophia will continue to inspire those around her with her unwavering determination and passion for martial arts.
Congratulations, Sophia! The school community celebrates your incredible achievement and eagerly awaits the next chapter of your remarkable journey.

Maisie, a Year 9 student, has been invited to attend a prestigious summer training camp in Bulgaria. This is a fantastic opportunity for Maisie, as she will be training with top coaches and other talented players.
What’s more, Maisie is on the aspire pathway, which is the route to the England team. This is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport.
But that’s not all – the basketball team that Maisie plays for, the Bromsgrove Bears, recently won the u17 YBL final held at Worcester University. Maisie played exceptionally well during the event, showcasing her talent and commitment to the sport.
Students took part in our exciting inflatables event, which took place over two days last week, to acknowledge the hard work and efforts last term. During the event, each year group had two hours dedicated to bouncing and having fun with their peers on a wide range of inflatables, including Human Table Football, Dash and Grab, Bungee Run, and many more.
Heads of House ran competitions during the event with Heads of Year awarding “Golden Tickets” to selected students who demonstrated Studley Values such as adaptability, aspiration, charity, creativity, independence, maturity, resilience, and selflessness.
This event was a fun-filled and rewarding experience for our students, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing them enjoy themselves while showcasing their values and teamwork skills.
Year 10 Design Technology students recently went on an exciting field trip to the MAD museum in Stratford. The museum is a unique and fascinating place that showcases mechanical art and design. During the visit, the students had the opportunity to research and explore the various mechanical toys on display, which will provide inspiration for their own toy designs this term. This experience was invaluable for the students, as they were able to gain a deeper understanding of the principles of mechanical design and how they can be applied to create their own unique toys. We are excited to see the creative and innovative designs that our students will come up with this term, and we are confident that their visit to the MAD museum will have a lasting impact on their approach to design and technology.
Year 10 and Year 11 students successfully completed a practice expedition for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award in the picturesque Cotswolds region. The expedition was designed to prepare the students for the challenges they will face during their official Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition.
The students spent two days and two nights in the Cotswolds, navigating their way through the picturesque countryside using map and compass. They were also responsible for setting up camp and cooking their own meals.
The expedition was a great opportunity for the students to develop their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. It also gave them the chance to connect with nature, something that is becoming increasingly important in today’s digital age.
The students faced a few challenges during the expedition, including unpredictable weather conditions and difficult terrain. However, they worked together to overcome these obstacles and successfully completed the trek.
Weather conditions were difficult, with a downpour Saturday which didn’t end until 2am Sunday morning. Mr Fincham didn’t get much sleep on the first night due to the cold temperatures and had to shelter in the toilet block!
One of the students said, “It was a great experience to be out in nature and away from technology for a few days. It was tough at times, but we helped each other and achieved our goal. I’m looking forward to the real expedition now!”
They will complete their qualifying expedition in July, when they will spend three days and two nights in Long Mynd.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a popular initiative that encourages young people to develop their skills, take part in physical activities, and volunteer in their local communities. The Silver Award is the second level of the scheme and requires students to complete a range of challenging activities over a period of several months.
Completing the practice expedition is just one step towards achieving the Silver Award, but it is an important one. The students now have the confidence and experience needed to undertake the real expedition, which is sure to be a memorable and rewarding experience for all involved.
With 15 weeks left of this academic year, why not try and earn some house points and the possibility of a voucher?
On Friday 24th March, students were tasked with bringing in any loose change to participate in the “coin challenge” house competition. The aim was to create the longest chain in the sports hall possible from the coins, and the longest house chain would win. Students went above and beyond, and brought in many more coins that we could have anticipated!
Pegasus were victorious with a whopping 86 metre chain, with many more coins left over after the time was up! A massive thank you to students from all three houses who participated, your contributions raised £298.31 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Last half term we held our first ever Speech and Drama showcase. Students have been working extremely hard all year in their lessons, learning how to develop their acting and public speaking skills. We had the pleasure of watching a variety of monologues, duologues and prose, ranging from Shakespeare to contemporary pieces. A huge well done to all of our fantastic performers, and to our Speech and Drama teacher, Mrs Dickinson, for all her hard work with our wonderful students.
